The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about an urgency to pay heed to alarming issues. In these times, many families are trying their best to cope up with the financial stress that has been brought about by this pandemic, as we all come from different backgrounds coming up with an ingenious and practical approach to the issue of fees is the need of the hour.

Students of MNIT Jaipur were given a 'Suspension of Teaching' Notice (i.e. OFFICE ORDER No. MNIT/REG/OO/2020/1820) via institute mail on 16th March, 2020 whose point (2) instructed students to leave for their home with immediate effect. Thus, there is no doubt to the fact that the students weren't able to avail facilities of Hostel Accommodation, Mess Charges (for non-Day Scholars), Library & Book Bank, Computer/Internet, Sports & Creative Arts Society, Students Welfare, and Industrial Training & Placement for at least half of the previous semester, the cost incurred upon us for the above mentioned facilities is in upwards of Rs. 46,500 for the whole of the semester. Thus, considering that we couldn't avail these facilities for at least half of the semester (as cessation of teaching was immediately after mid-terms and the following 'Holi break'), we see no reason for at least half of this money to be written off, hence, at least Rs. 23,250 needs to be adjusted in the fees of the upcoming semesters.

Having said the above, the same argument is applicable when we are being asked for "Institution Fees" for the next semester that is a total of Rs. 15,300 considering the present circumstances students wouldn't be returning to the institute at all, and within the sub-categories under "Institution Fees" there is only merit to ask fees for Examinations i.e. Rs. 800.

This implies that at present the fees of Rs. 80,065 is completely unjustified especially on the face of such financial distress and the fact that we'll be paying for services that we know can't be availed. Thus, taking into consideration the above the reasons a fee of Rs. 42,315 should be charged instead, even if the genuine plea of reimbursing/adjusting previous semester's fees is to not be taken into account, it still remains that the Institution Fees for the next semester shouldn't be charged leaving the fees for Examination (making the fees Rs. 65,565), however considering the financial distress it would be appreciable if the institute takes cognisance of the gravity of the situation go with the former demand.

Many students are waiting for this matter to be heard, consequently they are waiting for a review of the fees that is to be charged and so are postponing their fee payment till at least the deadline i.e. 4th September 2020, we hope that in the mean time our institution proactively engages our concerns and leads us to a harmonising and logical conclusion post this juncture.

Regards,

Students of MNIT Jaipur
