On Friday, August 30, an email was sent out to the College of Social Work informing students of changes made to the academic schedule for the Spring 2020 semester. This message states course times will be altered in order to accommodate a “lunch break” in which students and faculty will have opportunities to participate in activities relevant to the mission of social work. It is recognized this change comes from a place of good intention. However, it is clear that not every student feels as though they were given the opportunity to be heard in this decision—a decision that affects all students, faculty, and staff in various ways.

The students in the College of Social Work greatly appreciate the opportunity to be more collaborative and the attempt to facilitate communication among students and faculty. While it is understood this is a conflict within the current department infrastructure you are trying to remedy, to change the schedule so abruptly and without adequate opportunity for student input is only proliferating further conflict. Students within the College of Social Work have jobs, children, commutes, and endless other complications which we feel were not considered when making the decision to change the schedule in a way that would require many students to take classes late at night, or on Fridays.

We urge you to consider reverting the Spring 2020 schedule.
