no-tales started this petition to Dean's Office of the Medical University of Lublin & Hope Medical Institute

This is a copy of a letter sent to essential personnel from our University located in Europe. We are American students that attend an international medical school located in Lublin, Poland.  We are petitioning our school to allow for the optional online learning without being penalized. Due to the pandemic students are unable to obtain visas and are at high risk of contracting COVID-19.

To: Dean of faculty of Medicine at MUL
             Cc: Hope Medical Institute
             October 2, 2020

This letter is in response to the expectation mandated by the university, that all international students return for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. In order to comply with this mandate, there are two over -arching challenges and concerns that we are facing; first, the inability to legally travel and secondly, the health risk resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. In lieu of the pandemic, Poland like many other countries including the United States have chosen to close their borders and /or restrict foreign nationals from entering, in the earnest effort to control the spread of COVID-19.

In, anticipation of restrictions and newly implemented travel laws, the Dean issued a letter to be used for obtaining a visa and also, recommended the letter be used during travel as proof of student status. However, due to the seriousness of the pandemic, borders have implemented strict adherence to travel laws including proper documentation, in our case a student visa. Unfortunately, the letter issued by the Dean does not meet specified criterion for international travel and neither can it guarantee the passage of one country to the next.
Based on the strict adherence to travel restrictions, we would be breaking the law, if one travels without a student visa. This decision presents a very real risk of being detained in a foreign country, a risk that the school as well as the students must consider.

Secondly, many countries have issued travel warnings and have closed their border to foreigners as well as strongly deter travel to countries considered high COVID-19 areas. These warnings are serious and should be adhered, as suggested by both the United States and Poland. In fact, we were informed one of the professors at the university has recently tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. While, we are eager to continue our education is should be done in the safest manner possible for both, the students and staff.

In good faith, of full tuitions that have been paid to the University we ask, that the Dean and other essential personnel will reconsider its decision of mandatory in person attendance as well as, facilitate on-line learning for all classes. It is important that we are afforded the opportunity to continue our education in-spite of, these extenuating circumstances that we are all facing.

Lastly, we are grateful for the opportunity to study abroad and eager to continue our education but would like to do so in the safest manner possible for both, the students and staff. We are asking that the school kindly, reconsider its decision based on the inability to obtain visas and the present health risk. As we move forward, with our medical education we are hopeful and optimistic that Hope Medical Institute and Medical University of Lublin, will continue to foster a learning environment that is safe, healthy and for all.
Thank you for your consideration,
