Why this petition matters

Started by Tony Toni Wright

I attended the University of Mobile, in one of my communication classes; there was a group of Caucasian people who blatantly had false facts of black history on their PowerPoint slides for a project we had to do on leadership and no one recognized the mistakes, not even the professor. They used Malcom X picture to say he was the father of Martin Luther King Jr;  after I informed them of their mistake, they said who is Malcom X. That situation let me know where they stood in knowing their history. I began to ask random students some basic questions on black history figures and they had no idea who I was asking about. This class would help those who are of color and not of color to learn their complete history and we can all become more aware of the history of social injustices in America. We need to acknowledge marginalized and disenfranchised communities in America. Black history is American history! We need to educate everyone with African American history because “All Lives Matter can’t matter until Black Lives Matter too”.This is a very sensitive and uncomfortable time for everyone so we should capitalize on the vulnerability of people’s emotions and make this class happen for the better of everyone. The University of Mobile is a very prestigious school. The environment at the University of Mobile is one of the best I’ve ever experienced. Adding this class would balance the education experience at the University of Mobile. Let’s make this happen
