When I came to Scripps College, I had a goal in mind: study what I loved. For some students, pursuing a passion isn't defined by a pre-approved major track, and that's why we've all self-designed major. The process requires an immense amount of planning, self-discipline, foresight, and courage. Rather than being handed a list by an adviser detailing what courses we have to take during our four years at Scripps, we have to plan out an entire major. It must be approved in a lengthy petition by the Committee on Academic Review. We have to convince administrators that our self-designed majors are detailed, cumulative, engaging, and can land us a job out of college -- not something that every approved major can do.

We are asking for our majors to be represented just like all of the other approved majors on campus. After all of our work, they are real, approved, and just as difficult as any other major. Scripps has taught us to be strong, self-sufficient, independent women; why should our majors be any different?
