De Montfort University to implement a 'No Detriment Policy' following other universities.
Why this petition matters
Initially students across the UK were faced with union strikes (which we supported) however this consequently impacted our education. Covid-19 then hit and schools/universities across the globe made difficult decisions regarding studies and exams by either scrapping them entirely or migrating them to an online format.
We love De Montfort University and all of its fantastic and supportive staff! De Montfort University is renown for taking on mature students and putting their student's wellbeing first however it appears these students have been forgotten.
This is unprecedented - and students who have children, elderly/sick family members are expected to take their exams as if under 'normal' conditions. This is unfair on them and countless other student's who can't go home or are struggling with mental health due to the situation.
Most Universities (such as Cardiff etc...) have implemented a no detriment policy. A no detriment policy acts as a “safety net” to ensure students obtain at least their average grade so far in the year, or with a better grade depending on results in summer exams or assignments, so long as they secure at least 40 per cent.
I know that some students are considering dropping their course because they are also being expected to homeschool their own children alongside revision for exams.
This really is a scary and unsettling time for everyone, and most students are concerned that they will not do as well as they had hoped this year because of the difficulties they are being faced with. This is not something we should be penalised for and we should not be scared of failing a module because of things that are simply out of our control.
Please help us by letting DMU know that we would be grateful for them taking these factors into consideration by also implementing a no detriment policy.
