Washington, DC is currently one of the country’s hot spots for Covid & has the highest number for cases. The hospitals are overwhelmed & asking for the Mayor to acknowledge that this is a health emergency!! The families of the nations capital should be supported at this time with making the best choices for their children & provided resources for virtual learning. There should be flexibility, reasonable accommodations & respect for parents who wish to act according to their better judgment.

Personally, I was forced to enroll my daughter for in person learning after being labeled as a negligent homeschool parent & she started 12/10/21. By the 17th of December she was very sick & tested positive for Covid (for the 1st time ever) by the 22nd of December. We both got sick, and honestly, it had me more sick than her.

In order to have children return to school for in person learning after a very hectic holiday and health crisis is beyond me. I participated in the school testing option on 1/5/22 to see what the test would say & they were both negative. Because my child & I both still felt uneasy about her returning to in person learning, she stayed home the 6th & the 7th. There were over 9,200 new cases of Covid in DC since 1/1/22.

One of the only things we leave out the house for is to walk our dog, 3 times a day. This weekend she developed a sore throat so we went to her doctor first thing Monday morning(yesterday) to get a strep throat & Covid test. As of today (1/11/22), I was informed that she is POSITIVE for Covid again! Now, whether it is the same Covid she had or a new case, I do not have a clue. This is what many people are facing right now, UNCERTAINTY. So therefore we should not be forced or gaslighted into going along to get along!

WMATA (DC Metro) is also not reliable at this time and is the main source of transportation for DCPS students. They are not cleaning the metro properly, the buses/trains are very much packed due to delays & many people working/riding are not wearing masks!! There are parents who still have to work & spreading it to their children & sending them right to school. Someone should be looking into all these “Negative” rapid test results!!

This health crisis is not getting better & we in the nation’s capital deserve so much better!!

We need better options, more resources as parents & we should NOT force children in burning buildings nor force vaccination for children when vaccinated people are still spreading & getting sick from Covid. My heart goes out to every DCPS family, for the teachers & other staff who are jumping through hoops for something they do not believe in, but will not refuse because they need their jobs.
