Look at a separate funding system for indoor team sports.
Back in 1997 the British Cycling Federation were ranked 17th in the world and close to bankruptcy. 1998 they secure £900,000 of lottery funding and the rest is history. They are the model of success and although they tackled the easier medal gains first (track cycling) they were preparing themselves for the bigger challenge of the road cycling. We unfortunately, in our team sports, don't have that luxury and have to tackle the European and world stage every other year.
14 of the top 16 teams in handball are European.
7 of the top 16 teams in Volleyball are European
10 of the top 16 teams in Basketball are European
So it is easy to see the challenge faced by each of these sports, it takes time to get into the top 8 in Europe were we would have to be to have a chance of Olympic qualification.
Only 2 weeks ago Dave Brailsford, Performance Director for British Cycling and David Tanner, his counterpart at British Rowing, highlighted the importance of lottery funding.
Surely this points the way for a change in the way funding is looked at for these team sports.
