We need fair rescheduling charges for domestic airlines

I recently had to reschedule by airline travel booking to a day prior with the same airline(SpiceJet). To my shock I found that my rescheduling charges are the same as cancellation charges. I had booked the ticket a couple of months in advance and I'm requesting a change while there is still a month left for the journey.
I am a normal middle class guy who is making a living by working in Pune. I'm trying to make it to my hometown 1300 kms away to attend my friends's marriage. Unfortunately I booked the ticket in the evening instead of the morning slot of the day. I realized it only after the payment was made. I tried calling the airline who deferred me to the operator who booked the tickets. The operator said its the airline that can take a call. I mailed the airline hoping to get a proper response. I got a reply saying that I had to pay the full cancellation charge. I mailed the same to DGCA and got no response.
The ticket was not some summer sale ticket discount. I believe it is inherently unfair of the domestic airlines in India to treat rescheduling as cancellation. They may charge the difference in fare and some internet banking charges.I believe this would have been fair to pay on our part as passengers.
I had a similar issue with indigo once before. but, they made a work around. I bought a new ticket and got a full refund for the first ticket. But, I believe there should be a fair mechanism across all airlines to treat cancellation and rescheduling differently.
