Rebecca Smith-Benton started this petition to Muriel Bowser Mayor of District of Columbia

My 15 year old son recently developed Tourette’s and was recommended for evaluation to Psychiatric Institute of Washington DC (PIW) by DSS.  He was admitted as an emergency and the process took most of the night with admission actually happening at about 5am.   All medication (even that recommended for slow decrease not sudden) was withheld and he was not fed.  He was offered some crackers, for which he was so eager that he slipped and fell.   I was notified 6 hours later that he was injured.  He was refused permission to call me for hours.   I complained and was told an X-ray had been requested, it never happened.

Then my son was attacked by 4 other patients and I was contacted to be informed he was going to the ER.   I was refused permission to speak to my son, the police who had been called to the incident, took the phone and held it for my son to hear me, he was completely terrified and traumatized.   He was transported to the ER at Children’s Hospital where I arrived soon after.   He had a radial fracture and concussion.
I have been advised by parents, staff and police officers not to allow my son to return to PIW because it’s unsafe.  My experience is not a isolated case.  I have since talked to other parents and the accounts have been harrowing. I would like to get the facility closed on safety grounds.

Many of the children admitted to PIW are in the foster care system without parents to shout out for them.  Insurance dollars are being taken in exchange for unsuitable and unsafe procedures for the highly vulnerable.    There must be a full investigation with a view to complete closure and reassignment of the facility to a competent organization.

In an effort to bring awareness I expressed my concerns and my own situation live online.  I was contacted by the hospital and requested to stop.  Financial compensation was offered, and increased 3 times with a request to remove my post.   I need help to raise this issue publicly for the sake of the children of DC and the catchment area.
