Susan Grau started this petition to DC Comics

As a collector of comic books for over 40 years, and as a longstanding fan of comic book-based movies and television shows, I've noticed a trend, particularly at DC Comics, pertaining to female characters.

"Girl."

Power Girl.  Hawkgirl.  Supergirl.  Batgirl.  Elasti-Girl.

Yes, there are 'boy' and 'girl' sidekicks, such as Superboy and Wonder Girl, and plenty of 'girl', 'boy' and 'lad' superhero names in the Legion of Superheroes, but, in my opinion, it's past time that these rest of these 'girls' grow up into 'women.'

Look at the dictionary's definition of the word:

"1. a female child, from birth to full growth."

These characters have grown over the years and many of them are well past the age of 18.

"2. a young, immature woman, especially formerly, an unmarried one."

No one in the DCU is married anymore, and all of these characters are definitely 'mature.'

"3. a daughter"

None of these characters are the daughters of other superheroes.

"4. Informal: Sometimes Offensive. a grown woman, especially when referred to familiarly."

This one is the one that hits where it hurts - it can be offensive when used to describe a grown woman as a 'girl.'  It serves only to lessens a character, treating them as less mature and capable than their male counterparts.  It's a leftover of a bygone era where men commonly called their secretaries and their assistants 'girls.'

Dick 'Robin' Grayson was around for 44 years before he matured into Nightwing, while Barbara 'Batgirl' Gordon has been around for 48 years and is one of three 'Batgirls' in the DCU.  Yes, there's already a Batwoman, but that didn't stop Grayson from coming into his own.

Supergirl has been around for over 55 years, and in the new television show bearing her name, she's an adult working in an office.  Hardly a girl any longer.

Likewise, Power Girl has been around for almost 40 years and is a grown woman who owns a corporation who has never been anyone's sidekick.

Worst of all is Hawkgirl, a character who was the 'sidekick' of Hawkman, created back in 1940, yet even today, as the new 'Legends of Tomorrow' prepares to debut in the coming months, Falk Hentschel (age 30) is 'Hawkman,' while Ciara Renee (age 25) is still 'Hawkgirl,' and not 'Hawkwoman.'

The time is overdue for the female characters of DCU to be given the respect they deserve.  It's time the girls became women and joined the ranks of the male heroes as their equals.
