Orson Scott Card is a homophobe of the highest order. He authored an essay entitled "Homosexual 'Marriage' and Civilization" after the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality in 2004. In it, he states, "The dark secret of homosexual society—the one that dares not speak its name—is how many homosexuals first entered into that world through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse, and how many of them yearn to get out of the homosexual community and live normally." That says a lot. It says he does not view gay and lesbian as normal or equal to straight people. He is a member of the National Organization for Marriage, which denigrates gays and lesbians as part and parcel of its opposition to marriage equality.
DC Comics has had a good track record of being in line with equality in its writings and the talent in which the organization has hired to create these comics up until now. I feel this is step backward they cannot afford to take.
Also, the very idea of what Superman stands for is justice, fairness, and standing up for the underdog. He stands for "truth, justice, and the American Way." Justice is equality and equality justice. That is something Card will never comprehend. To let a bigot like he put words into the mouth of a character who stands as a metaphor for such ideals is hypocrisy and a travesty of the highest order. In short, he has not earned the right.
