Food Not Booze at Ward 7 Safeway's

Several months ago, a meeting was convened between community members, leaders and key local leadership of Safeway. We brought our observations and the many concerns of our neighbors in hopes of a resolution and resolve on the issues that have plagued both stores in our community (East River Park and Good Hope Rd. Marketplace). Many of the issues discussed with Safeway’s leadership were met with promises for improvements, yet our concerns laid dormant and were ignored.

In August Councilmember Vince Gray conducted a surprise walk-through with community leaders and media outlets in both Ward-7 Safeway stores. Without this action, our concerns would have fell short on Safeway’s list of priorities.

This is unacceptable, nor should it be tolerated anywhere in our community.

Both Ward-7 Safeway’s liquor licenses are up for renewal with the District of Columbia Alcoholic and Beverage Regulation Administration (DC-ABRA) on Monday December 4, 2017. Some members of the Safeway customer satisfaction group have reassembled to challenge their renewal.

We are challenging the renewal at both Ward 7 Safeway’s on the basis of peace, order, quiet, and trash. Please understand, we are not trying to impede Safeway from conducting business. Our area of concern and focus is our community and neighbors; our objective is to hold Safeway accountable as a good neighbor, doing business in Ward 7.

Please join us making our community, a priority!

Thank you,
