Help FHS Band Get School Board Approval To Participate in Pearl Harbor 80th Anniversary

The Farmington High School Marching Band (Farmington, UT) has been invited to represent the state of Utah in the 80th Anniversary Commemoration of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 2021.  This is a historic and educationally rich experience. There are only 3 living survivors from that horrific attack and all 3 are expected to attend this event. The parents of these students and surrounding community have shown overwhelming support for this unique travel experience.

This travel opportunity creates the need for a policy exemption from the Davis School District Board of Education because it falls outside of the district’s parameters for extended travel in 3 areas: travel outside the continental US, days of school missed for travel (must be 3 or less), and cost of travel (can't exceed $1K).  All financial, safety, and educational concerns have been successfully addressed by district and school administration as well and the Farmington High School band director. There is absolutely no cost to the school or district for this trip. This is a highly educational trip worthy of the 5 days of school that would be missed by the students. This trip was deemed worthy of an exemption by the students, parents, school administration, and community due to its historical and educational value.

Unfortunately, the Davis School District Board of Education does not support the students, parents, school administration, or the community. On Wednesday, June 2nd, the School Board voted against allowing the band to travel for this experience.  Their reasoning was, "lack of equity in travel opportunities throughout the entire district" and "needing to adhere to policy”. It was made evident during the school board meeting that there is no travel opportunity in existence that would tempt this board to approve a travel exception.

I urge you to join us in requesting that the Davis School District Board of Education overturn their decision to deny the Farmington High School Marching Band the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and participate in this historical and life changing event.  We also request that the Davis School Board, with the help of parents and local administrators, revise their extended travel policy as it no longer provides for the needs and desires of the students, parents, school programs, and community as a whole within the Davis School District.

Thank you for your support.
