Article IV, Section 1 of the Bylaws of the Board of Trustees states the following requirement for electing the President of Davidson College:

The Trustees shall elect only a person who is a loyal and active church member, whose life provides evidence of strong Christian faith and commitment. Such faith and commitment will be appropriately expressed by affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and active participation in the life of Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

On Wednesday April 17, 2013, the Trustees of Davidson College announced that they do not find “sufficient support for any particular change to [the bylaw].”

At Davidson College, we have a tradition of change and acceptance. We became a co-educational institution in 1973 and implemented the Davidson Trust in 2007 in efforts to make Davidson accessible for students from varying backgrounds. As our student body has changed, so has our faculty and staff. Our connection to the Presbyterian Church (USA) is not reflected in the face of one individual, but rather in the collective faces of our entire community. The archaic principles behind the Presidential bylaw do not reflect the values of this increasingly diverse campus, as we prepare for “lives of leadership and service.”

The purpose of this petition is to demonstrate that “sufficient support” to remove the religious requirement of the presidential bylaw does exist. We believe that a change in the bylaw is consistent with the values of our community, values which we recognize have been deeply shaped by our Presbyterian tradition, but are by no means exclusive to it as made evident by the diverse members of the college community.
