Before explaining the negatives of the Separate Lunch schedule at John F. Kennedy High School, I would like to further explain what it is and why it was put into action in the first place. The Separate Lunch schedule is a system in which there are two separate lunch periods, and which lunch period the student has is based on the location of his or her 4th period class. This system, which was put into action Tuesday October 2nd 2019, is a result of there being too many fights at John F. Kennedy High School the weeks prior.

This system has already been receiving backlash from both students and parents. Some say it makes it impossible to make up tests and quizzes for those students who have after school activities such as a school sport, 7th period, or a job. Along with that it also contradicts school club meeting schedules and forces students away from friends and classmates. So we have to ask this very important question to the faculty and staff of JFK. Is the Separate Lunch Schedule Policy the only solution to the problem? You would think the answer to that question would have to be yes, after all the faculty and staff should only want what is best for their students. But after hearing arguments from both sides many of us have come to the conclusion that it's not the only alternative, it’s simply the easiest. It is what some may say a “band-aid" to a legitimate issue. SCUSD has recently been notorious for these "band-aid" policies that have have had, for the most part in the past, zero effect on the issue at hand. For a lot of us students, the time where we could “hang out” with our friends and classmates at lunch was what we look forward to most in our school day. This schedule takes away the part of school that alleviates stress and leaves us unmotivated throughout the day. Students, parents, and teachers not only want, but deserve, a greater solution than simply dividing lunch into two periods.

Many other alternatives to this policy, even after just a couple of days, have been brought up to the administration and faculty, yet still nothing has been done. Instead of the changing of the lunch schedule, why not fundraise to earn money for an SPD officer on campus? That would be a long term solution. After all this solution has been proven to work not only at other high schools, but also in past years at John F Kennedy. If a student chooses to fight, they will, no matter their lunch period. So why not prepare for the inevitable instead of creating another bad situation that just adds onto the amount of work for teachers, and staff.

I, with the support of the majority of the student body and many teachers, are working to end this. We should have a voice, because we too are a part of this school. By signing this petition you will help us get our point across to Principal Van Natten. I have heard enough to where I can speak for myself and my peers when I say that we are not happy.
