Concerned Citizens In Opposition To Greenhaven started this petition to Representative Ed Rynders and

Please join Concerned Citizens in Opposition to Greenhaven in petitioning the Georgia State legislature to not approve creating the proposed city of Greenhaven in unincorporated DeKalb County. For the past five years, advocates to create this proposed city have attempted to get approval from the Georgia State legislators.

Four (4) times these attempts have failed. However, plans to introduce a new bill in 2019 are underway. The group, Imagine Greenhaven, hired lobbyists to convince legislators to sponsor a new Greenhaven bill and/or vote to approve this new city. The resulting impacts are your property taxes will increase and create additional layers of government.

This petition allows you to voice your opinion on the front end of the process and indicate to legislators that you do not want the city of Greenhaven approved by the Georgia legislature. This petition does not have an impact on whether there is a referendum at this point.

Reasons Concerned Citizens in Opposition to Greenhaven opposes this new city:

  •  Your taxes will increase by paying city taxes and fees
  •  No strong commercial base to offset the tax burden on residential property owners
  • City tax rate is unknown; however, an additional 1.5 mills can be assessed after the initial millage rate is set
  • You will continue to pay DeKalb County Government and DeKalb County School taxes
  • You will pay DeKalb County Government and/or other contractors for services not offered by the city
  • Feasibility Study is five years old and the data does not reflect current economic or financial realities

All legislators can vote to create this city, without regard to the negative impacts on our community. Proposing a bill to create the second largest city in Georgia with 300,000 residents is financial not sustainable. It is urgent that you act now!
The legislature is only in session for 40 days beginning January 14, 2019.

Get involved. Let your family, friends, neighbors, and organizations know what is happening. Encourage them to sign the petition. Most citizens, affected by this legislation, are still unaware of the negative financial impacts to them and you should not support being in a city until you gather the facts about the costs, services, and impacts to your financial well-being.

Cityhood proponents are relentless in their efforts to obtain General Assembly approval. Opponents of the proposed City of Greenhaven must be equally committed in getting the legislation denied. Signing this petition is one option to express our position on this issue.

ACT NOW!
