Why this petition matters

Started by Carter Otten

In 2019, Canada reported 83,576 abortions, including 27,911 which were performed in Ontario. A fetus is not considered to be alive or human by Canadian law but simply a part of a woman's body, allowing a woman the right to abort the fetus if she so chooses. Murder is not considered wrong because it takes away something that some already has, but rather because of the future that is being taken away. For example, murdering a poor person (who has nothing) is similar under the law as murdering a rich person (who has plenty) not because something has been taken away from them, but because of the future that has been cut short. Similarly, a fetus also doesn’t have anything except a future, so why is it morally acceptable to terminate a fetus and destroy any future it might have? A woman's right over her own body should not be considered greater than a fetus's right to that future nor proffer her the right to terminate it. Furthermore, a fetus in the second or third trimester is viable outside the womb with current medical life support systems, similar to people on life support. Although our law and healthcare system goes to extraordinary lengths to prolong a life without hope in palliative care, it refuses to acknowledge the unborn who are similarly viable but with much greater hope for a future. Our understanding of development in utero has been growing including an awareness that an unborn can recognize its mother’s voice, and medical devices like 4D ultrasounds give an unprecedented view of the developing fetus and collectively demonstrate how much life an unborn actually has, and challenges our law’s assumption that the fetus is not alive. If we continue to allow the unlegislated termination of the unborn, thousands of futures will be lost forever. Please consider a law to provide the voice that our unborn cannot express for themselves.
