IMPORTANT UPDATE (Dec. 23. 2014);
The central theme underlying most of Stand Up for Dogs’ change.org petitions – including the one below -- is that the mammoth $55.7 Billion/Yr. U.S. Pet Industry heavily influences what initiatives national (and local) humane organizations, animal care & control agencies, etc., undertake and what they do NOT undertake. PLEASE ESPECIALLY NOTE THE SHOCKING 2013 ARTICLE BY THE WELL-RESPECTED ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND (ALDF ) WHICH FOCUSES ON THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB (AKC), AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (AVMA)…”…AND OTHER PET INDUSTRY GROUPS”:
ALDF article: "BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE: VET & PET INDUSTRY GROUPS BETRAY ANIMALS"
Those humane organizations and other organizations effectively become part of an ‘Extended’ Pet Industry’ working, in many ways, to the detriment of millions of companion animals throughout the U.S. This is addressed in the following blog at www.standupfordogs.com/blog (these blogs are in ‘date order’; the condensed version is the Nov. 5, 2014 blog and the full version is the blog dated Oct. 31, 2014).:
"EXTENDED' PET INDUSTRY ('EPI') IS 'COMMODITIZING' COMPANION ANIMALS & CAUSING UNNECESSARY SHELTER INTAKE, IMPOUNDMENT TRAUMA AND SHELTER KILLING THROUGHOUT THE U.S.
The $55.7 Billion/Yr. U.S. pet industry has been extremely fortunate in enjoying very strong revenue growth over the past 15 or 20 years, even prospering during the prolonged economic downturn of the early 2000’s which adversely impacted so many others in this country (with life-changing home foreclosures, etc.). PetSmart, Inc. ($ 6.76 Billion revenues in 2013) is particularly notable within the industry.
With revenues of the above magnitude, it’s no wonder that the marketing and public relations efforts of PetSmart, Inc. can provide funding to various entities for Adoptions, ‘targeted’ spay/neuter (e.g. the spay/neuter programs of the Humane Alliance of W. North Carolina)….and make adoptions space available in PetSmart’s retail stores. While the current focus on Adoptions is certainly welcomed, it’s important that the pet industry’s customer base also realizes that this not entirely magnanimous. This focus almost exclusively on adopted/’recycled’ animals…and not on ‘local’ breeding excesses everywhere… ensures that the source/'pipeline' of freshly-bred dogs (‘customers’ for pet industry goods/services) is overflowing and unabated.
PetSmart’s benevolent influence (…good business too, as discussed below) is badly needed, therefore, to help address the inertia of a number of the most notable non-profit organizations in the humane movement, the animal control profession -- and the veterinary profession, which of course, is a component of the pet industry.
Please strongly urge the above entities to pro-actively support two extremely fundamental changes for the welfare of animals: 1. Elevating the Legal Status of Companion Animals; 2. Halting the Ubiquitous Indiscriminate Backyard Breeding (‘BYB’ing’) across this country (as distinguished from the larger, ‘more visible’… but far fewer… commercial puppy mills…that serve as ‘donation magnets’ to the national humane organizations). (Please also note the law review documentation… below the petition to Maddie’s Fund and the AVMA….of the veterinary profession’s most unfortunate opposition to elevating the legal status of companion animals!).
In the absence of support from a pet industry leader such as PetSmart, animal advocates across the U.S. will have to find a way to overcome the powerful legislative lobbying machine that blocks so many truly important measures that would be to the tremendous benefit of companion animals.
One approach to this is that covered in Note 1 below the following petition:
http://www.change.org/petitions/dog-lovers-everywhere-sign-petition-a-3-part-pledge-to-stop-indiscriminate-backyard-breeding-by-byb-s , i.e. ‘Moral persuasion’ exercised via the ‘reverse economic multiplier effect’.
This “Indirect Legislation” currently seems to be the only avenue left to those of us who really want meaningful, fundamental change.
We’d need to get this message out to a significant sampling of the large majority of U.S. households that own one or more dogs and/or cats and those who are prospective acquirers of dogs/cats ...and make it very clear that the ONLY way this situation of excess supply will ever be brought under control is by economic pressures/consumerism on the very people that the legislators WILL listen to, i.e. the breeders (the "Golden Geese") and the 'derivative' pet industry (those who benefit from all the 'Golden Eggs' the breeders produce).
