Nicole Sonajo started this petition to Governor David Ige

On January 7th, my grandfather peacefully passed away at home, surrounded by many loved ones. It has been issued that a gathering of more than 10 people at any public areas are not accepted. COVID-19 has stripped us away from honoring the lives of our loved ones who passed away during these difficult times. Governor David Ige and Mayor Kirk Caldwell of Honolulu, Hawai’i has made social gatherings limited to 10 people only, applying to funerals as well. With many people consisting of huge families, I would like to suggest an allowance of no limited gatherings but restrictions will still be gladly obeyed. Face masks will be put on throughout the whole funeral viewing service as well as the burial ceremony. A 6-feet social distancing will also be taken into consideration whether inside or outside the church and during the burial ceremony regarding each household present. Church benches will be thoroughly sanitized after each use and meals will be individually pre-packaged and safely handed to each family. My grandfather deserves a funeral service and burial ceremony surrounded by those who spent loving and cherishing times with him. Being his youngest grandchild, I can vividly picture the little things we’d do together such as walking around the neighborhood and sitting at the bus stops to take a break before heading back home. When I am hungry, he would make one of my favorite childhood “meals” consisting of rice, sugar, and milk powder that I thought was a 5-star dish (I still think it is). My grandfather has helped raise the person that I am today, along with my cousins. Without him, my childhood wouldn’t have been as fun or cherishing. Now that he isn’t physically here with us, I would love to honor the hard working, soft spoken, and kind man that he was. He deserves to be peacefully put to rest, surrounded by his family. With COVID-19 having strict restrictions at public areas, funeral services should be less restricted considering we’ll never get to see our loved ones again.
