Caroline Simpson started this petition to David Davies MP and

Tintern Bridge is owned jointly by Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire County Councils, given to them by The Forestry Commission in 1952 as a public carriage road.  They have joinly neglected their responsibility to maintain it.  It looks neglected! Beautiful though - it is a Grade II listed bridge in need of maintaining - which they say will not be carried out until late 2022.

My parents bought Ferry Farm in Tintern with a right of way to access it over Tintern Bridge.  This is our ONLY passable access and it has now been taken away from us by Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire County Councils. They have cut us off from our property and land over the river Wye and bridge, by placing barrier bollards either end of the old bridge making it impossible to access our land by car.

The old bridge has been neglected for as long as I can remember and whilst it is in desperate need of superficial repair and maintaining it is NOT structurally unsafe as they are making out.  I remember as a child it had less greenheart sleepers - think it's safer now, otherwise it's barely changed in appearance.

We have independently had a thorough structural engineers assessment carried out.  This deemed the bridge structurally safe and could see no valid reasons to close it to us and deny us our access to our land.

Emergency services are now also unable to cross the bridge.  Just last week a cyclist knocked a pedestrian down and right there is another valid reason to keep this bridge open to vehicles.

Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) also need access across it as they have permission to use our river landing if needed whilst exercising and for emergencies.

A farmer also keeps cattle over the bridge which he needs to tend to daily.

The bridge has so much history attatched to it and its criminal to see it neglegted.  It should be preserved and looked after.   It was built to carry trains!

My parents are elderly and have campaigned their whole lives to keep public rights of way open along The River Wye for boaters, the irony is that it is now their own right of way we are now fighting for.  Without this, my father has had his world taken away from him during this later stage in his life (we all have). My parents dont have time to waste, both in their late 70's.  This has caused and is causing all concerned a lot of upset and distress.  We have barely been consulted with regards to the Councils' plans, equipment and farm machinery now unaccessable to service our land.

Ferry Farm is my elderly fathers happy place - or it was - where he enjoyed going to spend his retirement time, along with Mum - who awaits a second knee replacement so struggles to walk it.  Its so totally unlawful and unfair to see them stripped of this - all of us stripped of this access on our deeds, bought with the land.

I can't believe that the Councils' can be allowed to get away with just closing it to us (and the other land owners of Abbey Passage Farm) disregarding our structural engineers report.  Please, please support us by signing to have their ruling overturned and again allowing us to drive across the bridge - our drive way.

Thank you so much for your support! x
