I am a woman and a community midwife. Historically, contraception has not had the balance of being equally the responsibility of the male or the female...it has mainly been shouldered by women...and the effects of this has resulted in many consequences for the woman, from side effects of hormones, to contraception failure and those consequences,  abortions, adoptions, etc...the effects ripple out further to the the family,  community and nationally.....physical, emotional,  spiritual, economic effects to name a few....There is a lack of parity within the system of contraception. The funders of contraception make the rules and decisions on what they will or won't fund and even though it appears that contraception is reasonably cheap or even free in some respects, the effects on women are still evident. Men only have condoms available as a contraceptive method..if they don't choose to wear it, the women shoulder the consequences. Men's sterilisation/Vasectomy isn't funded for everyone and this needs to change and be funded to help all men choosing vasectomy,  the ability to have it done. Without funding, it generally costs over $450. Not all families can afford that cost and because at present only the woman's sterilization/tubal ligation is fully funded, once again the consequences, effects, repercussions, side effects, adverse outcomes, are shouldered by a woman. I'm wanting to petition the New Zealand Ministry of Health and our New Zealand Prime Minister who as a woman must realize the lack of sterilisation parity that we presently experience and ongoing effects.
