Stop Food Waste
370,000 tons of food is thrown away and wasted in the UK every year. Over half a million people go without food on a daily basis due to food poverty. In December 2013 the British Medical Journal said hunger in the UK had reached a 'public health emergency'. People who are starving and take the edible food from waste bins at the back of shops are prosecuted. Thousands of children are going to bed hungry. This is England 2014.
I call upon David Cameron to bring about a law saying that food which is fit for human consumption but past the dates on the products MUST be passed to charities, food banks or other organisations which will use the food to pass onto people who are unable to afford to eat or feed their families on a daily basis.
The laws must be changed so that shops, charities, organisations can not be sued by people who are given this 'waste' food in good faith.
We can not continue to throw away such large quantities of food when there are so many people here in the UK going hungry. The shops want to pass on the food but are afraid of being sued.
With charities like Save The Children working here in the UK to tackle this problem is it not time to say enough is enough.
It is time to give people back the power to decide for themselves whether to eat food which has gone past the dates on the packets. It is time to stop people here starving.
It is time to change the law.
