Introduce online election and council voting by 2020

Casting a vote in secret and with confidence that the vote goes to the candidate it was intended for is an intrinsic aspect of UK democracy.

Yet the only way any blind person can vote with confidence is to have complete trust in the person helping them to vote, whether that be by post or in person.

Here are just a handful of blind people's voting experiences in the 2015 election:

  • One man was given a template that didn't fit either his election or council ballot paper, so had to rely on officials to cast his votes.
  • An official, helping a blind lady to line up her template, did so incorrectly, causing her to spoil her vote.
  • When I went to vote, the official helping me had to scrabble around to find the template, and then had no idea how to use it. So I had to ask a friend to cast my vote.

To the neysayers who argue that online voting introduces security risks, we trust the tax office and the big banks to get it right, and the benefits that online voting would bring would far outweigh any security risk.

Please set the wheels in motion now so that online voting can be ready for the 2020 general election, and give everyone the chance to cast their votes with confidence and in secret.
