Allow Universities to distribute Social Work Bursary funding directly to Students

In September 2014 I started a Social Work degree with the intention of eventually becoming a Social Worker and making a difference to society.

The Social Work degree comes with the incentive of a Social Work Bursary to the lucky few.

Currently NHS Business Services Authority allocates a number of Social Work Bursaries to universities in order to assist with general living expenses whilst on the course and whilst on placement, however, the number of bursaries awarded is usually significantly less than the number of students on the course.

This means some students will receive £7425 more in funding than their peers. The bursary selection process is not means tested and my university has allocated bursaries on a 'first come, first served' basis.

I am not asking for more money from NHS Business Services Authority, I am asking for a change in the way the money is distributed. If the full allocated award is paid directly to the university then they can pay everyone on the course the same amount, eliminating the unfair selection systems universities are forced to implement.
