Require Insurance Companies to Cover Enteral Formula for Children

Our two-year-old daughter Elodie has a rare and life threatening condition (intestinal lymphangiectasia) that prevents her from being able to digest intact proteins. This means that her only source of nutrition for now and through the foreseeable is a special medical formula called Vivonex.
However, despite this being a doctor-prescribed medical necessity for her, our insurance company refuses to cover it. The cost of this formula for us is currently $800 a month.
California is currently one of several states where insurance companies are not required to cover enteral formula for children, no matter the severity of their disease. Thousands of families throughout the state are faced with insurmountable costs related to feeding their medically complex children.
Please tell our Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones to take action on behalf of these families to help these children grow and thrive.
