STOP 6th Form School Bus Fare Increase! Rising to £890 Sept 2017

Bedford Borough have decided to increase the 6th Form student bus fare from £380 to £890 per year from September 2017.
Cuts in local authority funding by central government has meant that Bedford Borough Council are required to make addition savings of £2.1m in 2017 and due to this they have voted to reduce the subsidy for the school transport for 6th form students. This means that the school bus fee for 6th formers will rise from £381.90 to a staggering £890 per student per year.
The government also introduced legislation requiring all children to stay in some form of education until they are 18 unless they take up an apprenticeship or volunteer.
With many children looking to use 6th form as a steppingstone to university and few apprenticeship or other options available to children in village communities, this policy unfairly discriminates against students and families in rural areas and therefore puts students who live there at an educational disadvantaged.
Not all villages are bastions of the wealthy middle-class and many rural communities have some of the poorest sections of society in the Borough. Many have few or no transport links and few local amenities, so equality in education is crucial to the opportunities for rural children.
This fare increase will cause financial hardship to lots of families and unfairly stifle the aspirations of many young people.
