Any unregulated facial recognition system poses a risk to civil and human rights in the European Union.

Facial recognition software has the potential for abuse. Studies have found that the technology performs less accurately in real life environments than claimed by vendors.

A new report by researchers from the Human Rights, Big Data & Technology Project, based at the University of Essex Human Rights Centre, identifies significant flaws with the way live facial recognition (LFR) technology was trialled in London by the Metropolitan Police Service.

British police have also used the technology to scan crowds at events and demonstrations to identify 'people of interest'.

Dublin Airport is also trialling live facial recognition.

The European Commission is exploring ways to impose strict limits on the use of facial recognition technology in an attempt to stamp out creeping public surveillance of European citizens.

It *must* regulate LIVE facial recognition and data retention. That is, close the loophole represented by LFR systems that run and train at the edge (on the camera) alongside systems that analyse CCTV and perform image recognition in the cloud.

We must act now!
