Tree clearing can directly lead to many baby squirrels being killed or orphaned during tree cutting season. Peak season varies on the species of squirrel and arborist/tree clearing businesses should have to follow checklist ensuring maximum effort is placed in preserving active nests of baby squirrels. Arborist and tree clearing businesses need to be held accountable to ensure that they follow environmental checklist.

If the tree absolutely has to be trimmed, carefully reducing the length of branches can still keep the nests safe and accomplish a trim until the squirrels have moved on.  Pruning/cutting trees when they are dormant may help keep nests safe as they are easier to see.  Trimming or cutting in late fall and into winter will have little chance that there will be active nests.

Assessing the tree for active nests and rescheduling trimming or cutting the tree will keep squirrels, as well as birds, safe.  Squirrels are good for our environment in that they bury nuts which helps grow many trees.  Please be kind to squirrels.  Save lives!!  Don't cut trees during baby season!!
