Josh Byram started this petition to Darlington County School Board

St. John's Elementary is the oldest, active school in South Carolina. Founded in 1818, St. John's has been located in the heart of Darlington for centuries. Its current main building, the former grammar school, was built in 1902. In 1915, the former St. John's High School was built - this now houses several elementary grade levels. History runs through the bones of SJE, as it is the most historic building in the city. In fact, its green space served as a wayside hospital in the mid-1800s. Many Darlingtonians can remember their May Day celebrations and Senior Nights at the Dargan Memorial Amphitheater, behind SJE - this was built in 1925.

Most importantly, this school has educated the students of Darlington for over 200 years!

Yet, today the DCSD school board has been challenged with the recommendation to close this historic school and merge it with another historical school, Rosenwald, as part of a $30 million new build. Instead of preserving history, this proposal intends to uproot it and displace many students from nearby elementary schools. Please sign this petition if you do not want to see the heart of Darlington become the most recent abandoned historical building! We believe we can keep SJE open for students to learn in an enriching, safe, and beautiful environment if money is used responsibly for updates where needed. We need your help!

Darlington is all too familiar with writing off history, which has been detrimental to the town. While some may propose another entity to fill the void in these buildings, we know that this hasn't happened in this county for quite some time. All we have to do is look at the historical buildings around us, including some schools, to know that often these "promises" are not kept. This is even true in St John's own neighborhood, as the magnificent J.C. Daniel auditorium sits vacant.

Darlington cannot afford to leave another piece of history behind. We cannot afford to let the only school located in the heart of this great town to be ripped away. We cannot afford 200 + years of history to be wiped out for convenience. There are still so many students who need to learn at SJE. So let's do all we can to #saveSJE! Sign our petition now! Thank you!
