It is no secret that store shelves around the world are inundated with plastic packaging. The issue with plastic lies in the difficulty it presents when being recycled, if at all. According to the EPA's "Data on Plastics in MSW (Municipal Solid Waste)", provided by the American Chemistry Council and the National Association for PET Container Resources, an estimated 35.4 million tons of plastic was generated in 2017, while a whopping 26.8 million tons of said plastic was landfilled (EPA, 2019).

Although the complete elimination of plastic waste is the ultimate goal for the future of packaging, this is no small feat, and is not a problem that can be solved over night. As an important step towards the end goal of zero plastic waste, this petition proposes the elimination of dark plastics used in packaging. Though some companies claim their product packaging is recyclable, dark plastics do not make it through the recycling process in the same way as lighter color plastics, sending them straight to the landfill.

This petition calls for companies to change their packaging by their own accord, as well as legislation and regulations to be put in place by those in office on the local, state, and national level. This would require companies to curb their use of dark plastics in favor of packaging that allows for greater ease of recycling, such as clear plastics, or glass.

For the companies that advertise themselves as 'green' and 'sustainable', easy to recycle and reusable packaging embodies these values. A green, sustainable future is one where plastics are not in our wildlife, food, forests, rivers, and oceans. We, the future generations, and all life on this planet deserve to live on a planet that is not littered in plastic waste. Plastic pollution is a monumental problem to tackle, but it is only by taking steps, no matter how small, that allow for change to happen.

At eighteen years old, I do all I can to avoid buying products in plastic packaging, and to recycle the rest, but I, as an individual, can only do so much, especially when daily necessities are packaged in plastics/dark plastics. In my town, our recycling facility does not accept dark plastics, even dark plastic products that have the recycling symbol on them. I implore both companies and those in office to take immediate action in remedying this problem at the source, so that myself, and the rest of the world's consumers, have the ability to recycle and reuse these products, knowing that they will see another life, and that we are, in fact, doing our part to foster a cleaner environment.
