Every year in the United States, cigarette smoking claims the lives of more than 480,000 people. Of these individuals, 41,000 die from exposure to secondhand smoke. Since 1964 secondhand smoke has claimed the lives of more than 2.5 million people. Being exposed to secondhand smoke puts one at risk for developing coronary heart disease, lung cancer, and strokes. The smoke from cigarettes contains more than 7000 chemicals, of which 70 can cause cancer.
Currently the State of Florida, has no legislation that prevents people from smoking directly outside the doors of a hospital or healthcare facility. Other states, such as New York, California, Virginia, and Arizona have passed laws that make it illegal to smoke within a certain area near a hospital. The purpose of this petition is to propose a statute which would ban smoking within 20 feet of a hospital or healthcare facility in the State of Florida. The aim for this statute would be to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke, ensure the safety of patients, and ultimately deter individuals from smoking.
