Student Standard of Dress Proposal District 118

Created and Consolidated by Molly Smith, Danville High School Class of 2018, and S.A.F.E. Advocate Mackenzie Kizer, Danville High School Class of 2020

Tops, Shirts, Blouses

  1. All tops must have a strap on each shoulder with an approximate width of three inches each. No tube tops, spaghetti straps, off the shoulder tops, camisoles, etc without a cover up.
  2. Any color or pattern may be allowed.
  3. Neck of the shirt may not sink lower than approximately four inches past the collarbone.
  4. Material may not be see through unless an undershirt/camisole is worn underneath.
  5. No back or side cutouts. 
  6. No midriff allowed. Tops must extend to the top of the pants or skirt, when arms are raised in the air.

Pants, Shorts

  1. Single toned pants may be worn.
  2. No rips anywhere in the pants. No chains, bandanas, markings, or patterns. 
  3. Shorts must extend to approximately four inches above the knee. Waistline must sit no lower than the waist.
  4. No pajama pants.
  5. Leggings only allowed under dresses and skirts.
  6. Single toned jeans and sweatpants are acceptable

Dresses, Skirts

  1. All dresses must have a strap on each shoulder with an approximate width of three inches each. No tube dresses, spaghetti straps, off the shoulder dresses, etc unless a cover up is worn.
  2. Shorts or spandex are expected to be worn under all dresses or skirts.
  3. Any color or pattern may be allowed.
  4. Neck of the dress may not sink lower than approximately four inches past the collarbone.
  5. No see through material or cutouts.
  6. Skirt or dress must extend four inches above the knee at the shortest point of the skirt.

Shoes/Accessories

  1. Sandals with a back strap are allowed- no flip flops.
  2. No body chains or bangles.
  3. Bandanas are allowed only as a headband. In no other way should they be worn or allowed.
  4. Hats are prohibited.
  5. No jewelry depicting gang symbolism or affiliation is permitted.
  6. Jackets, Hoodies
  7. Jackets of any color or pattern may be allowed.
  8. Hoodies are permitted, but hoods should not be worn over the head in the school building at anytime.
  9. Coats should not be worn inside the classroom.

General
Allowable Dress & Grooming

  • Students must wear clothing including both a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent and shoes.
  • Shirts and dresses must have fabric in the front and on the sides.
  • Clothing must cover undergarments, waistbands and bra straps.
  • Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, wood shop, and other activities where unique hazards exist.
  • School sanctioned team wear, worn as a team, is permitted.

Non-Allowable Dress & Grooming

  • Clothing may not depict, advertise, or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or other controlled substances.
  • Clothing may not depict pornography, nudity, or sexual acts.
  • Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected groups.
  • Clothing including gang identifiers are prohibited.
  • If the student’s attire or grooming threatens the health or safety of any other person, then discipline for dress or grooming violations should be consistent with discipline policies for similar violations.
