Problem
Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) students are in need of a free week with no classes in session during said time which would be the week before final examinations start. Classes get in the way of studying seeing that most students have them the majority of their day. Final exams are a stressful time to still require students to show up for their classes during dead week. Quizzes, exams, papers, and other projects are due during this dead week for many students. It is unfair that class time takes up the majority of the day with assignments being due that week and then that leaves no time left to study for finals. Classes during dead week currently do not seem beneficial due to what is being covered during class. The majority of the time new material is not being taught and they are just review periods. A lot of students also do not show up for those classes anyways.

A no class dead week would help improve stress levels and leave students with more time and motivation to actually be prepared for their finals rather than be concerned about assignments they need to complete. Mental and emotional health are also big concerns because all of this can be overwhelming and create a lot of negative stress and other anxiety. For the students a no class dead week would lessen the impact of workload and alleviate some of that unnecessary added stress. During this dead week it would also allow students to catch up on material or assignments they are behind on and turn them in. This dead week would also allow professors to have enough time for themselves to grade all assignments left to be graded before the semester ends.

With all of this being said, there are no downsides to having a no class dead week. It would improve and motivate students to feel confident for their finals and lessen other stress that comes with finals. Professors would also benefit from this type of system if implemented. I would also like to see this applicable to any other extensions of a merged Indiana and Purdue University including the institutions Indiana University and Purdue University.

Solution
What needs to be done is allow students and professors this type of catch up week. Professors need this just as badly as students do. One possible solution would be to extend both the Fall and Spring Semesters by one extra week to allow for this no class dead week. Another solution that could help alleviate stress would be for professors to not assign any quizzes, exams, papers, or projects due during dead week. It is more fair if those assignments were given that there were no classes at that time so students would be able to focus solely on those assignments. This would allow students to not stress out as much for those assignments and allow more time than the weekend to study for finals.

Personal story
The reason why I wanted to start this petition is because I feel like it is necessary to have a no class dead week. There are many benefits that would not only benefit the students but also the professors because they are stressed out as well. For me personally, I had an exam and some papers due during the week before finals. That is stressful and I feel like I haven't made very much progress studying for finals since I had those assignments due. Some of my fellow peers also feel like this would be a good idea if implemented.
