Lucas and Josie Whelan started this petition to Daniella Levine Cava Mayor of Miami-Dade county

The goal of this petition is to have Miami Dade County proclaim Gopher Tortoise Day as April 10th. This will increase awareness and appreciation for these long-lived, gentle reptiles. Gopher tortoises have historical and ecological importance in South Florida.  They have been a part of Florida's ecosystems for thousands of years. Ancient people in South Florida used them as a food source and until recently, Floridians would rely on them as source of nutrition. Gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species because they dig burrows that provide shelter for 360 other species of wildlife. Some of these species include the Gopher frog, Florida mouse, Eastern indigo snake, and hundreds of invertebrates like beetles and crickets. Without the gopher tortoise, many of these species would not exist. Gopher tortoises are found in many of Florida’s public parks and forests, primarily pinelands and coastal habitats.

Due to severe habitat loss (over-development) and degradation, Gopher Tortoises are declining in number.  Since these incredible animals are so vital to the endangered Pine Rocklands in which they live, it is important to restore their numbers and give Gopher Tortoises a voice.  With your help, we can establish Gopher Tortoise Day on April 10th in Miami Dade County.  This will inform the public, help to recognize and enforce tortoise conservation projects, and show that as conscious citizens, we care for the well being of our fellow animals.
