ME/CFS strikes 1 in 250 of us. It is a devastating illness, more disabling than angina or multiple sclerosis. Three quarters of sufferers are too ill to work or pursue education; a quarter are house- or bed-bound. Hundreds of thousands of lives are ruined; people who could otherwise be contributing to their communities are dependent on family or on the state. The cost to the economy is estimated to be £6.4 billion per year.

"ME is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neurological disease, and this classification is recognised by the Department of Health, Medical Research Council and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)", according to patient.info.

Despite this, almost no effort is being made to find a cure. In recent years, medical research into ME/CFS has received a tiny fraction of funding going to other, less common and less disabling conditions like multiple sclerosis.  ME/CFS remains a medical mystery: it can be detected by blood tests (1, 2) or by physiological measurements, but its mechanisms are still not understood. The health services are hobbled by lack of understanding and can offer only palliative care.

This is an absurd and unjust situation and it needs to change. We call on our Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner to lend his support to the efforts by Carol Monaghan MP and others in the All Party Parliamentary Group on ME/CFS to get UK research going and offer hope to the hundreds of his own constituents, and hundreds of thousands of citizens across the UK, from the purgatory that is life with ME/CFS.
