Dear Mr Kawczynski

I am writing with regards to my father who is in a secure care home as he has an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s.

As a family we have not been able to visit him since February and precious time is slowly slipping away from us, he is eighty years old.

My mother is 79 and is missing him terribly they have spent 58 years together and because she could no longer care for him he was admitted into a care home.

Mum was told that two members of the family could visit him – exactly how is she supposed to choose between three siblings?

She had her visits cancelled a number of times due to staff testing positive and when she eventually did get to see him it was in nothing more than a garden shed.  My dad was agitated as the surroundings were unfamiliar and he would not settle – in the end after less than 5 minutes of the Carer trying to get him in to see my mum, mum told them to let him go back to his room.  This visit affected mum so much we as a family were worried for her own health, she became withdrawn and told us on numerous occasions that ‘her life was over without him.

After much persuasion mum made a second visit but again they expected him to socially distance and basically sit the other side of the room, this visit was distressing for both of them.

Only last week it was announced that ‘you can visit your relatives in care homes’ – this is UNTRUE nothing has changed. We are no nearer seeing him now as we were in February.

Time is slipping by for mum and dad – we worry about mums mental health, she wants to hold his hand, cut his hair, make sure he is looked after like she wants him to be.

As a family we ask you to appeal on our behalf and for other families who desperately want to  see their loved ones in settings that are familiar, not behind glass but being able to touch them, hug them and let them know we care, we are here, most importantly that we haven’t forgotten them.

Please please try and help our desperate situation.
