Say No to the Dress Code!

The Daniel Boone Area High School’s new dress code unfairly targets and objectifies young girls, while promoting sexist and outdated ideals.

At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, Daniel Boone High School changed it’s dress code to read,

“Tops may not be ‘low cut’, tight or expose undergarments. Off the shoulder shirts / tops or any top that exposes a midriff and/or back are not allowed,” Student Handbook, Discipline, Section 9, Letter A.

This wording implies that a student’s learning process is somehow “inhibited” by another student’s stomach or back. It unfairly targeted girls, while promoting the idea that women should “cover up,” so as not to distract the men and boys. It also shows young girls that they cannot express themselves through their clothing without being objectified.

This ideal needs to change. We propose getting rid of “Section Nine Letter A” in the Daniel Boone Area High School’s dress code. In doing so, the dress code will reflect our communities 21st century ideals, where women and men are equal, and our clothing does not define our learning process.
