On 12 January 2017 , First Constable D'Arne (Dee) De Leo, left for work on her motorbike.
Within 10 minutes she was dead.
Dee had stopped at a red light on the Boronia Road / Eastlink intersection when a truck behind her allegedly failed to stop at the red light and ran over her.
Dee died instantly. She didn't stand a chance.
The driver, Samandeep Singh, allegedly knew the truck had faulty breaks. He allegedly knew the truck was over loaded. He allegedly made no attempt to stop or swerve or indicate to Dee that he was going to hit her. He just senselessly ran her over.
Being an Indian national here on a spousal visa, Singh was assessed as a flight risk and was remanded in custody.
On 24 January 2017 Singh was granted bail despite police concerns that he is suicidal and might try to flee overseas.
Judge Jelena Popovic granted bail because she believed prosecutors failed to establish that Singh might not return to court for the hearing.
Hasn't Victoria learned from past cases where offenders were released on bail but have fled the country? Or have re-offended?
Isn't it enough that a beloved police officer, partner, sister, daughter and friend was senselessly killed on her way to work?
Please sign this petition to have this decision over turned. Singh deserves to be behind bars. He deserves to pay for what he did. He should NOT have been released back into the community.
Do this for Dee who fought hard to ensure justice for other people.
Do this for yourself, this could happen to you or someone you love.
Do this for Victoria - enough is enough.
