Fund our Volunteer Coastguards

Volunteers are some of the most amazing people in Victoria. They give up their time to help others with no reward other than the knowledge that they're giving back to their community. The SES and CFA get government funded support to do their bit for the community, so I was stunned to read in today's Age that the volunteer coast guard groups in Victoria receive no ongoing funding from the government for what they do. http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/all-at-sea-as-volunteer-coast-guard-struggles-along-without-ongoing-funding-20170609-gwocz8.html
These selfless people give up their time to be properly trained to complete rescues and educate the public on marine safety and then have to spend even more of their time fundraising because the government will not provide them with ongoing funding. As the wife of a fisherman, these organisations provide reassurance that he will be in good hands if something goes wrong. With the numbers of people owning boats exploding I would say that the 26 marine search-and-rescue units in Victoria, include the Victorian flotillas of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, Volunteer Marine Rescue Victoria and Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad are as vital to the community as the CFA and should be funded in the same way. This petition is to ask the state government to put their hand in their pockets and fund this important service.
