Change the Name of the Washington Redskins

By Lila Martinez and Sofia Sanchez-Martinez

The Washington Redskins should change their name and mascot because they are offensive, because they mock culture, and because people aren't mascots.

The Washington Redskins should change their name and mascot because they are offensive. For example, the mascot is stereotypical. It is stereotypical because it expects that Native Americans are things not people. Another example is, the mascot is a symbol of disrespect. It is disrespectful to Native Americans because mascots are usually animals, so having a Native American be a mascot is calling Native Americans animals. A third example is George Marshall, the owner and president of the Washington Redskins from 1932 to 1969 said that the Washington Redskins name change has nothing to do with William Henry Deitz, one of the Washington Redskins coaches and players when they were still the Boston Redskins.

Also, the Washington Redskins should change their name and mascot because even though some people say that the Washington Redskins name honors Native Americans culture, most people say that it mocks their culture. One example of that is the word ‘redskin’ is a dictionary defined slur and some people consider it a curse word. A second example is the mascots dance and costume make fun of Native Americans because its unauthentic. It is unauthentic because there are many different Native American tribes that have different outfits, dances, food’s, and more. A third example is Charlene Teters, a Native American activist, says the mascots dance is more like gymnastics than a religious Native American dance. It is more like gymnastics because the mascot jumps high and does flips.

Lastly, the Washington Redskins should change their name and mascot because people aren’t mascots. A first example is Charlene Teters also says “Being Indian is not a character or a role one can play’’ which means that you can’t be someone your not. The Washington Redskins disrespect that by having someone falsely dress up as a Native American. The mascots dressing up as Native Americans is like someone dressing up as a slave for Halloween. A second example is the outfit that the mascot wears is nothing like a traditional Native American outfit. A traditional Native American outfit is made out of leather or breechcloth. A third and last example, is no one has red skin so it is unfair to call Native Americans ‘’Redskins’’.

Even though the Washington Redskins are racist to Native Americans, there are other sports teams that also are racist to Native Americans such as the Fighting Illini, Cleveland Indians, Florida State University’s sports teams, and many others.
