After decades of continued financial decline attributed to the loss of a major employer, General Motors, the city of Flint’s leadership “switched water sources, a decision that was aimed at saving money,” (Smith, Bosman, & Davey, 2019).  This decision left Flint’s residents exposed to lead poisoning and other life-threatening diseases caused by their water being delivered through decaying lead pipes (Smith, et. al., 2019).

“Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. Absent, inadequate, or inappropriately managed water and sanitation services expose individuals to preventable health risks,” (World Health Organization, 2019).

Residents in Flint not only cope with attacks to their physical health, but also a lack of trust in their government. With the onset of the water crisis five years ago, residents felt optimistic about change.  Residents now feel angry and do not believe they will receive justice. Although 15 government workers have been charged with crimes related to the Flint water crisis, none have been sentenced to prison time (Smith, Bosman, & Davey, 2019).
