On Friday July 18, 2014, there was an Industrial Development Board meeting held at the Greeneville Light and Power building in which a request by US Nitrogen for a permit modification that would allow them to discharge 90 percent of its wastewater into Lick Creek, bypassing the Mosheim Wastewater Treatment facility.  This meeting was attended by both supporters of US Nitrogen and Save the Nolichuckey, a group of concerned citizens dedicated to informing the public about the decisions of US Nitrogen and how it could impact the environment.

Greene County Mayor Alan Broyles informed the crowd that if there were any outbursts, he would kick them out of the meeting.  Eddie Bruce Overholt made his way to the front and asked the board to speak up so the entire room can hear them.  Broyles instructed the police officers present to expel him from the meeting.  Overholt was later charged with interfering with a public meeting and resisting arrest.

The actions displayed by Broyles and the GPD officers present was an obvious overstepping of their boundaries.  Overholt later stated on Facebook that he was bleeding from his right arm as a result of his arrest.  If this is how a local government treats its citizens, then it's time to request change.  Overholt made an appearance in General Sessions Court today and plead not guilty to both charges.  The case was continued to September 22nd, which is plenty of time to influence the DA to drop all charges since this is an injustice that needs to be corrected.  Overholt is a 76-year old veteran who spent part of his life keeping us safe and he should be thanked for standing up for his fellow citizens that day.  Please sign this petition asking the DA to drop all charges against Mr. Overholt.
