Teaching about sexual harassment should be compulsory in schools
We think its important for people, especially young people, to be more aware of sexual harassment and its consequences. Its time that we put an end to sexual harassment in schools. Since the Harvey Weinstein case, there's been a huge focus on sexual harassment in the workplace. However, it's also a big issue across schools in the UK and can lead to both females and males thinking that its normal behaviour and that they shouldn't do anything about it. We need to tackle this.
Here are some shocking statistics on sexual harassment in schools;
-Over a 1/3 of female students have personally experienced some sort of sexual harassment at school
-Almost 1 in 3 teachers say they witness sexual harassment in their school on at least a weekly basis
-Only 14% of students who have experienced sexual harassment reported it to a teacher
-Over a quarter of secondary school teachers say they would not feel confident tackling a sexist incident if they experienced or witnessed it in school
-Less than a quarter of female students think their school takes sexual harassment seriously enough
