Daltile Corporation: Protect your Minority employees. UPDATE: ORAL ARGUMENTS HEARD IN FEDERAL COURT FOR AN APPEAL

Subject: Daltile employees should not be forced to resign due to unanswered racial slurs and sexual harassment by a Datile/Mohawk Industries buyer and employees.

 Dear Chairman Lorberbaum, President Wellborn and President Turner, Jr.

 Having been a loyal employee and customer of Daltile, employed 2005-2009, I am truly and unashamedly heartbroken at the unanswered racial and sexual harassment I received at the hands of a very malicious and vindictive contractor that Daltile has a monentary contract with his employer; being referred to as a “Black Bi*ch”, being in earshot of other comments about “Black Bi*ches” and being told racist jokes stating he was as messed up as a "N word" checkbook. Just unacceptable!  While I appreciate that it is difficult to control the actions of customers, this attitude of racism and sexual harassment was echoed by employees of Daltile itself.  I was ostricize by my co-workers for complaining of this said treatment and as if that wasn't enough, I began receiving sexually explicit text messages from a Daltile employee from his Daltile issued cell phone.  I filed and was granted a restraining order.  I made another Daltile manager aware and yet, when complaints were duly made, prompt and appropriate action was not taken by management, to date the Daltile employee is still employed with you.

 This acquiescence, this tacit consent allowed this abuse to perpetuate causing me extreme emotional trauma resulting ultimately in my having no other choice but to resign.

Being born in the 60’s I remember the history our country has had with race relations and to our credit we have endured and we have improved – I am proud of that.  Yet, when episodes like this occur, I am reminded that there is yet more improvement to be done. When I suffered this racism and my employer did not respond appropriately, as an employee of over 4 years, I could not help but recall the words of Dr. King when he said: "In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends” This statement has a new found appreciation in my heart now…but I wish it did not. The Daltile Corporation and Mohawk Industries are market leaders in the stone industry.  Should you not also be leaders in race and gender relations policy?

I am certain that The Daltile Corporation and Mohawk Industries would not allow employees to conduct themselves in a racially and sexually hostile manner towards customers. The same level of protection should be afforded to Daltile and Mohawk Industries employees. Therefore, I petition that employees, specifically in management of the Daltile Corporation should receive racial and sexual sensitivity training and should uphold a code of practice within their daily operations that will ensure the protection of minority employees from racist and sexually harassing customers and employees.

It is my sincere hope that you will heed my suggestion and take this modicum of action to prevent this pain I suffered and am yet suffering, being visited upon another of your employees in the future. We deserve better.
