Delay ENGI2103 exam until students receive meaningful feedback
The day this is written is April 6th, 2021. The final examination will occur on April 12th, 2021. The petition is being written in regards to the grading practices of the course ENGI2103 at Dalhousie University.
As of today, students have only received 20% of their mark. Two test grades were received, where feedback was provided for only one of the two tests. The three tests done in February and March have received no feedback. Students are concerned about whether or not the Professor will have sufficient time to mark these assessments and return them to students before the final exam. Students deserve the right to receive feedback on their work and adequate time to reflect on their mistakes.
The grading practices in this course goes against Dalhousie's Grading Practices Policy.
Relevant points are:
QUOTED:
"A.
- 1. Students throughout the University can expect assessment and grading practices that are valid,
consistent, reliable, timely and reflect appropriate academic standards as defined by the academic
discipline; - 2. The evaluation of student performance is made in a fair manner congruent with academic standards
and that adequate feedback on the student performance is provided to support student academic
success; - 3. Students receive meaningful feedback early enough in the term to facilitate student success, including
the ability to make appropriate changes to their registration if necessary;
D.
- 3. Throughout the term, Instructors are expected to provide feedback to Students that clearly signals to Students their academic performance relative to the Course learning outcomes, and ultimately their Grade in the course.
- 4. In all Courses, this feedback should occur before the deadline to withdraw from the
Course without receiving a ‘W’, (as published annually in the Dalhousie Academic Dates). "
Reference: Dalhousie Grading Practices Policy
As per Dalhousie's policy, feedback has not been given in a timely manner or early enough in the term, it has not been meaningful, and has not supported student success. Students do not know if they are passing the class, and could not make any informed changes to registration. The exam date is approaching and this has put unnecessary stress on students. We are anxious about whether or not we will receive grades. It is unfair for students to write an exam without knowing where they stand in the class. If the marks are not released with sufficient time for students to reflect on feedback before the final exam, we request that it be delayed until this has been accommodated, or canceled.
Thank you.
