Vote YES! to Bring Back Lacrosse as an Olympic Sport in 2024

Lacrosse was a medal sport at both the 1904 and 1908 Olympic games, with Canada winning the gold both times. It was also a demonstration event during the 1948 London Olympics.

The growth of lacrosse has outpaced all sports at all age groups from youth to NCAA over the last 15 years .  We are pushing to have Lacrosse re-established as an Olympic sport in 2024.

The International Olympic committee has specific criteria that each sport has to reach before it becomes an on official Olympic sport. In 2013, the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Director Tom Hayes said they were filing for provisional recognition by the IOC, which requires 50 affiliated countries across three continents to be participants in Lacrosse. Hayes also mentioned he felt that the number of participating nations could exceed 100 by 2024 –- the target year for Olympic inclusion.

As of 2016, there are 55 nations confirmed as FIL members with Haiti becoming the most recent member. This means there would be plenty of competition at the Olympics and the member countries now formally exceed the required 50 country minimum to participate in the Olympic games. Lacrosse is a very fast paced and physical game excellent for audience viewership that would capture the Olympic audience's attention game-by-game.

Here’s Lacrosse by the numbers in the US according to US Lacrosse in 2015:

  • 802,000 Players Both Male and Female at all Age Groups.
  • FASTEST GROWING NCAA SPORT Percentage of Participation Change from 2000-2014 Men 95% Women 109%
  • Currently, Females Make up 35% of the Players, Males Make up 65%.
  • Fastest Growing High School Sport 2010-15, Male 29.5%, Females 29.8%
  • Fastest Growing College Sport with 40,313 Colleges with Lacrosse.

The Federation of International Lacrosse is working hard for an Olympic comeback and with your support I believe we can encourage the IOC to seriously consider the return of Lacrosse as an Olympic sport.  The results of this Change.org campaign will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee Executive Board for review on October 1st, 2016.
