Why this petition matters

It has been shown that teenagers' circadian rhythms are not at a time to learn at 7:25 in the morning. By moving the start time of d155 schools to around 8:15 there would be an increase in grades, participation, and a decrease of car crashes, not paying attention/falling asleep in class, and a decrease in depression rates. There have been studies by Brown University and the American Academy of Pediatrics that there are so many benefits to pushing start times back to 8:30. Not only would this benefit students, but teachers as well. With pushing the time back the classes can be shortened a bit and spread out a bit longer through the school year, or just end an hour later. It has been shown that the start times do not delay our time of going to sleep as teens are biologically set to start getting tired around 11 pm, as well as not having a big impact on after-school activities. Sleep is tremendous for our learning and mental health, so why wouldn't you want to make a difference in your community and make high school better for teens and their academics?
