Covid19 has killed the event and hospitality industry as social distancing and national lockdown became the new normal. The event and hospitality industry comprises of various small businesses such as technical production, furniture rentals, Décor hiring, decor services, balloon decoraters, bakers, printing and gifting,  marquees, structures, venues, entertainment artists, photographers, florists, event planners, waiters, barmen, restaurants and catering.

We would like the government not to exclude us from the reopening of the economy. Excluding this industry on all threat levels means that there is no income to feed our families and pay our bills. How are we supposed to survive as individuals let alone business survival?

We understand the vital importance in containing this pandemic and we fully support the President. However excluding this industry from every threat level in South Africa is taking away every hope we have of recovery. We suggest that private events are allowed to take place within acceptable limitations and restrictions. We are not promoting mass gatherings or reckless behaviours. What we are proposing is that we have limited number of guests at private events with safety measures in place such as masks, sanitisers and distance. Our aim is to try and keep the businesses and its employees to stay afloat during this pandemic. We are aiming to have smaller, intimate and private gatherings approved as it can be better controlled and managed compared to the 100s of people who will be rushing to the malls at threat levels one and two.

The events industry does not only cater for lavish events but also supply decor and other services for brand awareness and activations as well as attracting attention to other businesses that want to run special promotions. These services and installations can be offered outside of normal business hours in a safe and responsible manner.

Keeping the event and hospitality industry in lockdown means business closures for many including bankruptcy and poverty. The individuals in this sector are unable to be employed as the economy currently doesn't allow for job creation. Businesses and companies are in actual fact retrenching to keep their businesses afloat.

We urge the President, the relevant ministers and advisors, to strongly consider the event and hospitality industry in the decision making process. Keeping us in lockdown will kill not only the businesses but also the spirits of thousands of people. Not only are we business owners but we also employ a great number of people - so it is not our own incomes we have to worry about but also that of thousands of employees. By not allowing us to operate as part of the reopening of the economy, this will cause a ripple effect causing many people and other business sectors to suffer.

Thank you
