Marissa Katrin Romero started this petition to CVUSD School Board and

I am writing to you to ask for your help in contacting the CVUSD School Board and requesting that the School Board amend their school choice policy for EARThS so the families who live in our little neighborhood have the guaranteed ability to attend EARThS.

As you may or may not be aware, several years ago Manzanita was changed into EARThS Magnet School. While the idea of a science-based magnet school in our little neighborhood may have seemed exciting and beneficial at first, residents quickly saw an increase of traffic in the area due to the lack of buses and the amount of parents driving into the neighborhood. Additionally, several families who live in our neighborhood were quite surprised and are still surprised to this day to find out their kids are not guaranteed the ability to go to EARThS and have to enter a lottery system to try and get in. I am one of those families and instead of being able to attend the school that is directly across the street from my house, I am having to drive my child to a school in another neighborhood while another parent drives their child into our neighborhood. Since the opening of EARThS, CVUSD has opened 3 additional magnet or academy schools, all giving priority to the students who live in the immediate neighborhood of the school. Why doesn’t our little community get the same priority?

I realize that many in our neighborhood do not have elementary-aged children. If this is the case, I would hope that you would still be willing to contact the board in hopes of reducing the traffic in the area, being a good neighbor for the families with young children who may want to attend EARThS in the future, and help protect and possibly improve your property values. If you already have children attending EARThS, think of how lucky you are because there are definitely neighbors who have been denied and are forced to drive their children to other schools.

I believe in being a good neighbor and want to support the school that is in my immediate neighborhood. I also want to support CVUSD, but I believe they should ask our neighborhood what we want and give us the same rights as all other neighborhoods in which there is a CVUSD school. One of the missions of EARThS is to be eco-friendly. What is more eco-friendly than having neighbors be able to walk to school each day?  In my discussions with a school board member, I was told that in order for a change to be made, the board and the school choice committee would need to hear from large numbers of residents, not just the small number of kindergarten families who don’t get in each year.

I am also asking for your support in hopes of reducing the amount of traffic and street parking that occurs by allowing room and guaranteeing spots at EARThS for the kids who live here.
So please, take a few minutes to write a short email to the CVUSD Board Members and the head of the School Choice Committee, Assistant Superintendent Lou Lichtl and request that the school choice policy at EARThS be put on the board agenda and that the policy be amended to allow all families who live within the immediate community of EARThS attend the school at any grade level.

The school board members can be emailed individually or even better, due to the covid-19 restrictions, you can submit a written comment for the May 5 board meeting via email to sfehlman@conejousd.org and the board members will see your email prior to the meeting. Please also include llichtl@conejousd.org on your email and request that your comment be shared with the board as well as the school choice committee. Comments must be submitted by 2:00pm on May 4.

If you have questions about this issue or would like to discuss this issue further, I would be happy to provide more details. If you are interested in actually speaking at the board meeting, you can address the Board via telephone or address the board in person.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
